The Group X started as a four piece instrumental outfit whilst all still attending Hunstanton Secondary Modern "We were all in the fourth form at the time" Said guitarist Denis Smyth. "Reg, Robert Greenfield was a natural and could play anything on the guitar."
"We hadn't got a name when we entered a talent contest at the Country Club in Hunstanton" added Denis "They simply wrote Group X up on the entry board and the name stuck." The boys began to practice in Ingolsthorp parish hall and this is were they meet up with Nigel Burdett who became the groups frontman
In January 1964 a group profile appeared In the Lyn News as part of the paper beat poll competition, and although David Yardley was mentioned as part of the group he was infact only a friend of the bands who would regularly jam with them. New to the scene the band were unplaced.
The bands break came later that year when they appeared on BBC [programme required] and were introduced as the youngest band in East Anglia. The group got to play three numbers live! A reel to reel recording taken from the TV does exsist.
Having established themselves on the scene Barry Birdie Burdett brother of singer Nigel acted as the bands roadie. The group continued into the mid 1965 and they took part in round five of the great Mercury Beat contest on the 25th May 1965 at Dereham’s, Sunshine Rooms. Shortly after the competition Richard Heathcote left the group and was replaced by Jake Perrin. The group broke up in early 1966.
Denis teamed up with Ronnie Mickleburg of the Snettisham, Vampires and played as a duo before forming The New Mountain Dew with Terry Rose in 197[date required]
Not to be confused with the instrumental Group X that had signed to Fontana in 1963.
