Product description

It's 1968. Gangster has come to work for Freddie Mays, the Butcher of Mayfair, and he's enjoying his job. He likes the money, the girls, the suits, the power, the violence. And Gangster is good at what he does, very good. He frightens people and he's going to frighten Freddie Mays. When rival gang boss Lennie Taylor hatches a plot to kill Freddie and take over his territory, Gangster finds out about it and puts together a plan which will take out Lennie and Freddie at the same time. With Lennie dead and freddie inside, Gangster finds himself alone at the top with only one way to go. Gangster No.1 is a deadly battle of wills played out by a gangland leader and a young man who emulates him to the point of psychosis and beyond, savage, compleing and utterly unmissable!

A true example of British film-making at it's best.
This film has some of the sharpest writing, mesmerising acting, stylish editing and unconventional cinematography I have ever seen.
Paul Bettany is actually frightening as young Gangster: in this film he seems to hold a rage within him that always remains just below the surface of his completely calm but fuming expression, but which occaisionally bursts out in short, sharp explosions, bordering on pure madness. When he forces his 'victims' (for want of a better word) to look at him - "Look at my eyes" - you find your gaze riveted to the screen.
Malcolm MacDowell is equally brilliant as Gangster's older self, displaying how truly unhinged the character is, how he has been damaged by his quest for power. And David Thewlis is, as usual, perfect in his role of Freddie Mays - sleek, smart, clever - the epitome of British gangster without becoming a cliche, as he brings something to his character which the usual No#1 Gangster in British films is almost always without.
An amazing film, I strongly suggest you watch it: it will broaden your mind and change your previous ideas of controversy.

The transfer is 1080i (interlaced) not 1080p (progressive)... yes it d-o-e-s make a difference, yes the transfer is the worst I've seen on BD yet. Avoid unless a staunch fan and keep your fingers crossed someone like Arrow (unlikely) or Second Sight (slightly less unlikely) will pick it up imbuing it with the red carpet it deserves. Maybe Film4 will put out an updated disc? Not going to happen. Ghosting, combing, artifacts... every uninvited (unwanted) glitch and caveat is present. Even the 'de-interlacing' mode of my high end Oppo BDP-105D player can do nothing to mask this abomination, at least it is relative so the progression of home cinema enthusiasts; 8mm, 16mm, Super 16; Betamax, VHS, Laserdisc. DVD, BD, and BD UKHD / BD4K... whatever. The point is we've reached t-h-a-t point where there's no excuse whatsoever for putting out a washed out transfer on a Blu-ray. I've no idea where they culled this from but it wasn't the R2 English DVD. Evidence comes quickly in the opening minutes when Gangster (Malcolm McDowell) makes use of the urinals in the opening scene. Watch him closely before he exits and you'll see parts of hims literally disappear giving way to visuals of the urinal plumbing that should be right behind him but can be seen clearly through his torso.

Paul Bettany's character is completely opposite to the one he plays in Wimbledon, which proves that he has talent to pull off the challenging task of acting out gangsta's role. A man that takes the meaning of 'gangsta' to a new level, that is both clever yet twisted.
The film which is based in 1960's London, has trembling violence and a storyline that will keep you enthralled until the very end. This story of greed, rationale and revenge, is British cinemas' version of Scarface, but is more realistic and not for the faint-hearted.
Be warned, if you are used to Hollywood fake gangsta's that are loveable rogues, then this is not for you. For all those others that enjoy realistic gangsta's with no compassion, no remorse just pure dedication then ths is your No.1 - Gangsta No.1.

Brutal and compelling British gangster drama that's probably not for the squeamish with very good performances from Paul Bettany as the young gangster, Malcolm McDowell as the older version narrating the movie and David Thewlis as his rival. One of several British gangster films that came out in the 2000's trying to cash in on the success of Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch and Sexy Beast. This is one of the better ones.

Reasonable enough gangster film. Some scenes are a bit disturbing but that is based on what you don't see rather than what you do. I'm not averse to violence or violent themes but gratuitous violence I find is a bit off putting as it is so easy to place in a film as there does not need to be any (or very little) reasoning behind it. There is only one instance of this in the film so I won't dwell on it. Wouldn't really watch it again as there is little substance to it.
