If our kids don't fall down, they don't learn to get up. I still remember the day in high school when my mom forgot to pick me up from school. I'm the oldest of the four children. No doubt she'd had a long day with the other kids and it'd slipped her mind. After waiting at school for an hour, I walked the three miles home, and when I got to my house,I shut our front door with anger, stormed into the kitchen and screamed to my mom's face that she'd forgotten me.

Later that night, my dad told me I no longer had a ride to school the next day. I figured my mom would still take me, but when the morning came she refused. It was midterm, and as a straight-A student ready to start college applications, being late wasn't an option. In my mind, missing these tests would have been the end of my academic career. I begged my mom. I told her she was ruining my future and everything I'd worked for. But she held her ground, and that day I walked to school. And I missed my tests.

My mom didn't rescue me from failure. She let me suffer from it. She let me figure it out. She let me learn. Now, as a mom myself, I've realized that I want my kids to experience failure because failure is how we grow, learn and think. It's how we educate ourselves to learn what's right and respectable, and what's not. It's how we become

responsible and enthusiastic. Falling down makes us better because we learn how to get up.

    1. Why did the author get angry that day?
    1. She was tired.                   B. She failed in a test.

    C. She was late for school.         D. She was forgotten by her mom.

    25. How does the author feel about the experience according to the passage?

    A. Terrible.     B. Meaningful.     C. Colorful.     D. Embarrassing.

    26. What does the underlined phrase held her groundin Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Gave in to me.              B. Said yes to me.

    C. Kept to her idea.           D. Stayed in the place.

    27. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. My Way of Growing.          B. The Value of Failure.

    C. My Love for Mother.         D. Failure in My Life.

    C

The world celebrates Earth Day every year on April 22. But one school in Potomac, Maryland tries to honour Earth Day every day. Very young children are learning about the environment and taking action to show their love for the Earth.

A child's world is the world of playing. They love being outside in the open air, playing hide-and-seek, sliding and swinging on playground equipment. But children at St. James Children's School also add to that fun by picking up rubbish in the school yard. Inside, they learn to save water and electricity. They also recycle and reuse the waste. And every spring they get the soil ready to plant flowers and vegetables in the school garden.

The children at St. James range from six weeks to six years old. The environmental study begins at age two. Rebecca Boker teaches the children the importance of taking care of the Earth. Boker says every day at St. James is Earth Day. She mentioned some books, which contain materials that ask children to do something to help the environment

    and protect the Earth.

At St. James, children observe the growth of plants from seeds to sprouts(新芽) in cups kept in the classroom. Then they watch the plants continue to grow after placing them in the garden. The students also observe the life cycle of insects. After that, they know it is their job to respect the Earth just like they want others to respect their home.

But do these young children really get the message that their teachers try to communicate? Ms. Boker says yes. A few days later, the kids at St. James will go out to the school garden for the yearly clean-up. But for them, Earth Day will continue for the schooldays ahead as well.

    28. What can we know about the children at St. James Children's School?

    A. They learn to save water and electricity at home.

    B. They often go out to pick up rubbish in the street.

    C. They are not allowed to use playground equipment.

    D. They can help prepare the soil to plant flowers and vegetables.

    29. Why does the school make the children observe the growth of plants and insects?

    A. To help the children write better reports.

    B. To let the children enjoy the growth of life.

    C. To enrich the children's knowledge of agriculture.

    D. To teach the children the importance of respecting the Earth.

    30. What's Ms. Bokers attitude towards the way of teaching children at St. James?

    A. Unconcerned.    B. Positive.    C. Proud.    D. Anxious.

    31. What's the main idea of the passage?

    A. Children's love and respect for life.

    B. The protection of the environment.

    C. Earth Day at St. James Children's School.

    D. The celebration of Earth Day in schools.

    D

It's hard to tell if plants grow faster with classic rock or hip hop. Heidi Appel was a teen when The Secret Life of Plants hit the stores in 1973. This bestselling book devoted a chapter to music's effect on plant growth. Appel read the book. "I was fascinated, but skeptical," she recalls.

Appel is now a plant biologist. Seven years ago, she had conversation with colleague Rex Cocroft. He studies leafhoppers(叶蝉). These insects signal each other by sending vibrations through plant leaves. "When an insect starts to eat the leaf, I can't hear a thing," he said. "Its just deafening." Then Appel recalls, "We looked at each other and said, "Do you think plants might use insect feeding as a source of information?"

She and Cocroft designed an experiment to see if plants do in fact "listen" for predators. They placed a piece of reflective tape onto a plant leaf. Now they trained a laser beam onto the tape. If the tape moved even slightly, the signal from the laser light reflected by the tape would vary too. And how quickly it varied with time provided a measure of the leaf's movement.

As caterpillars feasted on the plant's leaves, they recorded the vibrations(颤动). Then, they recreated them for another plant. Finally, they placed actual caterpillars

onto plants that had listened to the feeding sounds. Other plants had received the silent treatment. Two days later, compared to control plants, those that had earlier heard the

chewing sounds had made about 30 percent more defense chemicals.

In almost every science fair I've ever judged, some high school student is testing if plants grow better to rock 'n' roll or classical music, Frank Telewski jokes. But the new study is the first "to clearly show a plant responding to a sound that's related to its survival--the chewing vibration of an insect pest," says Telewski. "If a plant can recognize danger and respond biochemically to up its defenses, that's a key advantage."

    1. When Appel was a teen, she doubted whether___________
    1. the Secret Life of Plants was a bestseller.

    B. plants grew better with classic rock.

    C. music influenced the growth of plants.

    D. she had a gift for researching plants.

    33. What did Cocroft find when he studied the insects eating the leaves?

    A. They left his sensitive microphones useless.

    B. They always ate the leaf of his plants.

    C. They destroyed his ability of hearing.

    D. They made trouble in his recording insects' vibration.

    34. What role does the laser play in the experiment?

    A. To measure the movement of plant leaves.

    B. To stop the caterpillars eating the leaf.

    C. To break down the leaf's defense chemicals.

    D. To shine the caterpillars into silence.

    35. According to Telewski, he thinks___________

    A. it makes sense for plants to respond to sounds.

    B. what students are tested at school is meaningless.

    C. plants defend themselves from pests with different sounds.

    D. different kinds of music make plants grow.

    第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Almost every college and university in the US now offers some forms of Internet-based application.    36    Some people believe that the best way to get a detailed look at what life is like at any college or university is by visiting the campus.

37    Most students begin visiting colleges and universities that they are interested in before their final year of high school. The majority of colleges and universities let interested students visit their campuses at any time of a year. Students can contact the admissions offices of the schools that interest them.    38    Their job is to provide information, offer advice and show future students different parts of the campus such as housing and classrooms. During the visit, students should also try to plan a meeting with an admissions official. Most schools keep a record of all the exchanges they have with candidates.

It's never too early to visit a school. This could be years before they even start thinking about the application process. Simply witnessing the college experience in real life can be helpful for young people.    39

However, visiting schools may not be a choice appropriate to everyone, especially international students. So for students who are unable to visit, there is one additional resource: social media.    40     Schools will permit students to post videos and pictures that show what their daily lives are like at college. These can provide applicants with a view that is almost as good as being there in person.

    A. Current students usually lead the tours.

    B. At present, school visits are becoming popular in the US.

    C. This means anyone can enter the campus whenever they want.

    D. Many schools use Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to advertise themselves.

    E. That is why some applicants even bring younger brothers and sisters with them on visits.

    F. There is more to visiting a college or university than taking a tour or meeting   administrators.

    G. However, students may miss a lot when they only use Internet information to make their college decisions.
